Once our funding target is reached, Abijoes will then site and build a new bird rescue centre catering for all types of wild and domestic birds. It will incorporate the latest ease of use features for disabled members of staff and volunteers.
The following will all be designed and built to accommodate these features
- Brick built heated aviaries with approx 40 - 50ft flight areas
- Secure open ground for ground fowl and chickens
- Purpose built aquatic areas for waterfowl
- Treatment rooms and Quarantine area
- Indoor accommodation for birds unable to cope with the rigors of open aviaries
- Offices and educational facilities, all with additional disabled access and facilities for visitors
- Shop, with public disabled access, offering a wide variety of bird accessories and gifts.
- Offices and educational facilities, all with additional disabled access and facilities for visitors.
- Telephone helpline and Outreach service to the community
- 24hr on call service.
Although there will be an able-bodied person on site at all times, disabled members of the team will be trained to manage the centre and all of the resident and incoming birds on their own. This includes arranging for collections of new arrivals, overseeing quarantine procedures, health checks, veterinary visits, general avian housekeeping, office management, and heading our bird welfare campaigns and tutorials.
They will offer outreach programmes to the local community to help both disabled and elderly people with their pet birds, either with direct ‘at home’ support or via our telephone advice line. The outreach programme will also offer bird care tutorials either on-site or at locations such as schools and community centres. It is hoped that this service will eventually become nationwide through local volunteer groups.
They will also spearhead campaigns that will raise the awareness of the plight of many wild, cage and poultry birds as well as offering advice and support via information leaflets, telephone and Internet services.
Abijoes is totally dedicated to the welfare and security of birds while raising the profile of disabled people working within animal welfare environments.
