Access to bird rescue for disabled people
Abijoes is a non-profit organisation that is raising money to build a unique bird sanctuary that will enable disabled people to become active participants in bird rescue, rehabilitation and care. Would you consider helping us to build a home for birds, and a future for people that are physically or mentally challenged? If you would, we would be delighted if you would read on......

So, what are we going to do?
Our aim is to build an exceptional bird rescue facility that is equipped to aid all types of birds, both wild and domestic, while incorporating ease of use features that will enable people, with a physical or mental disability, the chance to become actively involved in the day to day running of the centre itself.
We feel that it is important for people, whatever their disability, to be included within animal welfare environments and to achieve practical ‘hands on’ skills, working in a variety of different disciplines within these environments.
This is by no means an easy objective, but it is time that disabled people, struggling to lead a normal life, were welcomed as equal, active and valued members into the animal welfare sector. And, with the birds’ welfare as our top priority, we aim to do exactly that!

And what are we going to need?
Your support is the straight answer to this question. And lots of it! If we were to answer this question in any other way, we would be misleading you. A project of this size will take an enormous amount of support and funding. One of the biggest costs that we will encounter, will be the land we need to purchase to build the centre on!
This is by no means an easy objective, but it is one that has already acquired a great deal of support, from both the bird and disabled communities. Almost weekly we are asked, 'When will Abijoes be ready?' It is this that drives us on in spite of the huge financial obstacles that we face.
Indeed, there are many ways that you could help us, from passing on this information to others that you feel may be interested in this project, or more directly by either visiting our online shop and donation section or holding a charity event for us. You can find more details about the various ways that you may contribute on our 'How you can help' page.

What will people with disabilities be able to do?
According to each persons ability, they will have the opportunity to work as a team and to embrace all aspects of bird rescue, rehabilitation and care. From taking the first phone call for help, through to securing the casualty. Learning how to spot illnesses and disease, and treating those so affected, and, for our permanent residents, ensuring the birds long-term well-being during their day to day life at Abijoes.
In addition, there will be courses, outreach programmes and the opportunity to help other people with their birds in the wider community. More details about these projects can be found on the 'Our Aims' page.

What about the birds themselves?
From Bluetits' to Budgerigars’ and from Gannets' to Geese all are welcome at Abijoes. Although, understandably, there are different disciplines between different species and the application of any required treatment for wild birds, will differ somewhat to that of domestic types, each bird is given the best available care, that will ensure that it has the best possible chance whatever its’ situation.
Wild birds, on completion of treatment, will be returned to their natural environment wherever possible, while cage and domestic varieties will remain as permanent residents of the centre, able to live out their lives in relative freedom in one of the purpose built aviaries.
